How to Build Confidence as a Reiki Healer

In the early days of my Reiki practice, I remember feeling the same nervousness and self-doubt that many of my students share with me today. When you first begin your journey as a Reiki healer, it’s natural to wonder, “Am I really doing this right?” or “What if I can’t help my clients?” These thoughts can be overwhelming, and I want to share with you that it’s okay to feel this way. You’re not alone.

As someone who has been practicing and teaching Reiki since 2008, I’ve had the privilege of guiding many healers through this process. Building confidence as a Reiki healer doesn’t happen overnight, but it is absolutely achievable with patience, practice, and self-compassion.

Embrace the Beginner’s Mind

When you first start practicing Reiki, it's important to embrace the "beginner's mind"—a mindset of openness, eagerness, and a lack of preconceptions. This approach allows you to remain curious and humble, qualities that are essential for growth. Remember, confidence comes from a place of continuous learning.

In my early years, I found it helpful to remind myself that I was a student, even as I began to work with clients. Each session was an opportunity to learn, grow, and deepen my understanding of Reiki. I didn’t have all the answers, and I didn’t need to. This realization took a lot of pressure off my shoulders and allowed me to focus on the experience rather than on trying to be perfect.

Practice, Practice, Practice

One of the most effective ways to build confidence in any skill is through practice, and Reiki is no different. The more you practice, the more attuned you become to the energy and the more intuitive your sessions will feel.

I often advise my students to start with self-Reiki. Spend time each day connecting with your own energy, feeling how it flows through your body, and noticing the shifts that occur. This daily practice helps you build a strong foundation and deepens your trust in the Reiki process.

As you gain more experience, practice on friends, family, or even pets. The feedback you receive, both verbal and non-verbal, will help you understand how your energy is affecting others, and it will also give you the confidence to begin working with clients.

Trust in the Reiki Energy

One of the key lessons I’ve learned over the years is to trust in the Reiki energy itself. Reiki is intelligent and knows where it is needed. Your role as a healer is to be a channel for that energy, not to control it.

In the beginning, it’s easy to feel like you need to “do” something during a session, to actively make things happen. But the truth is, the most powerful Reiki sessions often occur when we simply get out of the way and allow the energy to flow where it needs to go. Trusting in the Reiki energy takes time and experience, but once you do, you’ll find that your sessions become more effortless and impactful.

Connect with Your Guides

If you believe in spirit guides, angels, or any form of higher guidance, now is the time to connect with them. Whether during meditation, before a Reiki session, or as part of your daily spiritual practice, calling on your guides can provide immense support and reassurance.

I still remember the first time I truly felt the presence of my guides during a session. It was as if a warm, comforting blanket had been wrapped around me, and I knew I wasn’t alone in this work. My confidence soared, knowing that I had this incredible support system backing me up.

If you haven’t already, take the time to build a relationship with your guides. Ask for their guidance, listen to their wisdom, and trust in their presence. They are there to help you, and their support can be a profound source of confidence.

Reflect on Your Progress

Sometimes, we get so caught up in where we think we should be that we forget to acknowledge how far we’ve come. Reflecting on your progress is an important part of building confidence.

Keep a journal of your Reiki practice, noting down your experiences, feelings, and any shifts you observe in yourself and your clients. Over time, you’ll begin to see patterns and growth that might not be obvious in the day-to-day. This record can be a powerful tool to remind yourself of your progress and to reinforce your confidence.

In my own journey, I’ve often looked back at old journals and marveled at how much I’ve grown. It’s easy to forget the small victories, but they all add up to significant progress over time.

Seek Community Support

As Reiki practitioners, we often work in solitude, but that doesn’t mean we have to be alone. Building a network of fellow Reiki healers can be incredibly supportive, especially when you’re just starting out.

Join a Reiki circle, attend workshops, or connect with other practitioners online. Sharing your experiences, asking questions, and receiving feedback from others who understand your journey can be invaluable. In the early days, I found great comfort in my Reiki community. It was a space where I could be vulnerable, where I could admit my fears, and where I could celebrate my successes without judgment.

Embrace Imperfection

Perfectionism is the enemy of confidence. I’ve seen so many healers hold themselves back because they’re afraid of making a mistake or not doing something “perfectly.” But the truth is, there’s no such thing as a perfect Reiki session.

Every session is unique, and every healer has their own style. Embrace your imperfections—they’re what make you human, and they’re what make your Reiki practice authentic. When you stop striving for perfection and start embracing your own unique way of healing, your confidence will naturally grow.

I had to learn this lesson the hard way. There were times when I felt like I had failed a client or that a session didn’t go as planned. But over time, I realized that each of these experiences was a learning opportunity. They helped me refine my practice and taught me that I didn’t have to be perfect to make a difference in someone’s life.

Celebrate Your Successes

Finally, remember to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. Acknowledge the work you've done each time you complete a session. Each time a client reports feeling better, take a moment to appreciate the impact you’ve made.

Confidence is built one step at a time; every positive experience adds to that foundation. Celebrate yourself, celebrate your growth, and know that you are doing meaningful work.
