How to Create Your Own Personal Sanctuary (Even in a Noisy Home)

Many of my clients tell me that my Reiki space is their sanctuary—the one place they can truly relax, let go, and breathe. But at home? That’s another story. Between kids, partners, work, and the general hum of life, having a peaceful space can feel impossible.

But what if I told you that you can create a little sanctuary of your own, even in the busiest household? It doesn’t have to be a whole room or even a big space. It just needs to be yours—a place where your nervous system knows; here, I can rest.

Start with Intention

A sanctuary is less about where it is and more about the energy you create within it. Even if you can’t carve out a whole room, setting an intention for a specific corner, chair, or even a time of day can shift your space into a personal retreat.

Find Your Sacred Spot

Look for a place in your home that feels even remotely peaceful. It could be:

• A cozy chair in the living room

• A corner of your bedroom

• A spot on the floor with a comfy cushion

• A closet you can repurpose for meditation or quiet time

Even if your home is full of people, your sanctuary doesn’t need to be physically separate—it just needs to feel energetically different.

Block Out the Noise

If a quiet home isn’t an option, bring in tools that help filter out the world.

• Noise-canceling headphones are a game-changer. Put them on with calming music, white noise, or binaural beats, and suddenly, it’s just you and your space.

• A small fan or white noise machine can help drown out household sounds.

• Earplugs work wonders when you just need a moment of silence.

Create a Sensory Shift

Your sanctuary should feel different from the rest of your home. Even small changes can signal to your body that this is a space for peace.

• Lighting: Use soft lamps, fairy lights, or candles.

• Scent: Essential oils like lavender, sage, or frankincense can instantly shift energy.

• Textures: A soft blanket, a grounding cushion, or a weighted pillow can bring comfort.

• Crystals: Amethyst for relaxation, black tourmaline for protection, or rose quartz for self-love.

Set a Ritual

A space feels sacred when you use it intentionally. Even if it’s just five minutes a day, create a ritual that makes this space yours.

• A quick meditation or breathwork practice

• Journaling

• Pulling a tarot or oracle card

• Simply sitting in stillness with your favorite tea

Enforce Boundaries (When Possible)

If you have kids, a partner, or roommates, let them know this is your time. It’s okay to say, For the next 10 minutes, I need this space to myself.

For moms with young kids, sometimes the best you can do is create a sanctuary within yourself—taking deep breaths while folding laundry, stepping outside for a moment of fresh air, or even turning a shower into a cleansing ritual.

You deserve a space where your soul can exhale. Even in a noisy home, you can create an oasis of calm—one that nurtures, restores, and reminds you that you are just as important as everything and everyone else.

Where in your home could you create your own little sanctuary? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear how you’re making space for yourself!
